Overview

Ecological Planting is a dynamic and multidisciplinary high school/middle school course designed to inspire students and provide them with tools to create meaningful connections between art, nature, science, engineering, and design. Through hands-on, project-based activities, students will engage with the principles of ecology and sustainable planting practices while honing their interpersonal skills and applying their knowledge in real-world contexts.​

  • Hands-On Learning: Students will participate in practical, project-based activities that allow them to experiment, innovate, and directly apply ecological concepts.

  • Interdisciplinary Approach: This course bridges multiple fields, including art, nature, science, engineering, and design, fostering a holistic understanding of ecological planting.

  • Interpersonal Skill Development: Collaboration is central to the course, as students work together in teams to brainstorm, plan, and execute their projects.

Course Structure

Throughout the course, students will engage in a series of guided activities, each focusing on specific aspects of environmental design. Topics include:

  • Understanding local ecosystems and biodiversity

  • Design principles for sustainable gardens and landscapes

  • Integration of art and aesthetics into ecological spaces

  • Innovative planting techniques and engineering solutions

Students will explore these topics through hands-on projects that progressively build their skills and knowledge. Each project is designed to be interactive and collaborative, encouraging students to think critically and solve problems.
